The genesis of the bust:
The main orientation in modeling Socrates were two Roman copies of ancient Greek busts. They gave us the most reliable clue as to how Socrates may have looked. In addition, however, a slight idealization of the figure was important to us. Today we know very little about the person of Socrates, but much more about his philosophical teachings. A bust of Socrates is therefore also a symbol of the origins of Western philosophy. Other reasons why we did not slavishly stick to the ancient models in modeling were our own claim to detail work and the style of implementation that our entire program draws. The result is a bust of Socrates bowing down to the ancient masters of antiquity while making use of our modern methods of digital modeling and 3D printing.
Sokrates
469 BC - 399 BC
Socrates was a Greek philosopher having been fundamental for Western thought, who lived and worked in Athens at the time of the Attic Democracy. In order to obtain knowledge of human nature, ethical principles and world understanding, he developed the philosophical method of a structured dialogue which he called maieutik ("midwifery art"). Socrates' outstanding significance is shown above all in its lasting effect within the history of philosophy, but also in the fact that the Greek thinkers before him are called pre-Socratic, today. To his fame contributed significantly that he accepted the death sentence imposed on him for allegedly pernicious influence on the youth and disregard of the gods and did not perceive an escape out of respect for the laws. Until his execution by the hemlock, he and the friends and students visiting the prison were busy with philosophical questions. Most important philosopher schools of antiquity relied on Socrates. Michel de Montaigne called him the master of all masters in the 16th century, and Karl Jaspers wrote: Having Socrates in mind is one of the indispensable prerequisites of our philosophizing.
