Origin of the bust:
A well-known bust of Goethe, created by the artist Christian Daniel Rauch, was an important reference point for our artists at work. Not least, since Goethe himself was very pleased with the result: "Rauch has sent a cast of my bust here and you can be very happy with it."
One of Goethe's most famous portraits is a painting by the artist Joseph Karl Stieler from 1828. At that time, Stieler's portraits had such a high reputation that many famous figures have been portrayed, such as Humboldt, Beethoven and Wagner, but also regents of numerous royal families. Therefore, this image was one of the most important orientations for the modeling of the bust, for our artists. Also, the great similarity of the image to a real plaster mask of Goethe was decisive. In 1807, at the request of the Viennese brain researcher Franz Joseph Gall, Goethe had have made a life mask. Illustrations of this mask were a valuable clue for us to make the face of the bust as lifelike as possible, and to refine where the painting was more idealizing, which was a legitimate and desired means in the portrait art of that time.
A third important model was finally the famous sculpture of Goethe with Schiller in Weimar.
We have portrayed Goethe with clear, wide-open, not too serious eyes and slightly raised head. The result is a look into the distance, looking forward and slightly visionary, but not too heroic. Appropriate to Goethe, who worked creatively throughout his life and created poetry and works of art that have remained of the greatest importance up to the present day.
