There is one one known portrait of Hölderlin by the artist Franz Karl Hiemer dated 1792, when Hölderlin was just 22 years old. However, in those early years Hölderlin was very active.
Then there was a massive slump in Hölderlin's life when he was forcibly admitted to the University Hospital in Tübingen in 1805 at the age of 35. According to the state of medicine at the time, he was declared insane. Years of therapy followed, which from today's perspective, should hardly have improved his condition. When Hölderlin was finally released, he retired to a tower room in a house in Tübingen. There he spent another 36 years until his death. At times he wrote poetry again, but he had written the most important works long before. When one speaks today of Hölderlin's late work, his works in the years before the illness are meant and not his works that were actually written ?late?.

Since there are no usable portraits of Hölderlin in later years and his poetry from a young age is decisive for his fame, we decided to model him as a young man as well. As always, we did not just try to copy the template as a bust, but instead created an independent portrait of Hölderlin with the artistic experience of our digital sculptors. It was particularly important to us to express the determination and pride of the young artist Hölderlin in his facial expression.

Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin (born 20. March 1770 in Lauffen am Neckar, died 7. Juni 1843 in Tübingen) was a German poet who is one of the most important lyrics of his time. Within German literature around 1800, is works cannot be assigned to Weimar Classicism nor to Romanticism.
