During the modeling process, it was important to us that the bust reflect the sensitive, inwardly conflicted man. We certainly did not lack for source material; Van Gogh painted a multitude of self-portraits. These paintings, too, reveal a man at odds with himself. Through high—at times even exaggerated—color contrasts and a restless brushstroke, many of these portraits also offer a tentative glimpse into the painter's soul. Not least for this reason, Van Gogh served as a great role model for the artists of Expressionism, who ultimately abandoned realism entirely, transforming painting into a vehicle for expressing the inner life.
In some of his paintings, Van Gogh depicts himself as extremely gaunt and emaciated—at times even more so than he likely was in reality. We have adapted our bust to reflect this, though only within the bounds of what still appeared realistic to us. Thus, we have modeled a bust that attempts to represent a symbiosis of the real man—Van Gogh—and his self-image. In this way, we honor an artist whose work has become an indispensable part of our cultural landscape and continues to captivate countless people today.
There are few historical likenesses that depict him at the height of his creative powers. We used these as the basis for our bust, infusing his facial expression with his passionate, spirited nature. The result is a reinterpretation of his portrait that remains, nonetheless, historically accurate.
