Genesis of the bust: There are numerous paintings and drawings by Humboldt. From his older years, some daguerreotypes (precursors of photography) are preserved. One of the most famous portraits is an oil painting by the artist Joseph Karl Stieler from 1843. It represents Humboldt somewhat idealized in middle age, although the portrayed at the time of the creation of the painting was already 74 years old. Nevertheless, the portraits of Stieler had such a high reputation at that time that many famous people, such as Goethe, Beethoven, and Wagner, but also regents of numerous royal families, were portrayed by him. Therefore, this image was the most important orientation for our artists in modeling the bust.
We portrayed Humboldt in his late middle years, when he already had a large part of his research trips behind him and spent a great deal of time preparing and presenting his collected data. In particular, his five-volume work Kosmos was created at that time and consolidated Humboldt's high reputation as a naturalist.
On one hand, we gave the bust a rather serious facial expression, which reflects Humboldt's meticulousness as a researcher. But his head leans slightly to the side and a soft smile plays around his mouth, pointing to the great curiosity that naturally underlies a researcher like Humboldt.
