There are some photos of Florence Nightingale, almost all of which show her in younger years. Up to the age of 36, Nightingale was very active. In the years 1853-1856 she led a group of nurses who cared for wounded and sick British soldiers during the Crimean War. Then she returned to the UK, herself chronically ill, and from then on lived a withdrawn life as an invalid. However, her willingness to work was unbroken. So, she collected tons of data, wrote reports and statistics and prepared her data visually so that the information could also be understood by less knowledgeable people. In the years after the Crimean War, she was considered a leading authority on health care issues.

We decided to portray Florence Nightingale in our bust in younger years when she was still active in public. Not least because we only found usable pictures from that time. But also because it were the years that shaped her calling.

Unlike many of her famous contemporaries, it was obviously not important for Florence Nightingale to look serious and meaningful in the photos. Instead, she kept still with a neutral eye for the long exposure times of photography at that time. It was important to us to sculpt Florence Nightingale, through head tilt and facial expression, as a person who put her whole life into the service of the community and put her personal needs behind it to a great extent.

Florence Nightingale (born May 12, 1820 in Florence, Italy, died August 13, 1910 in London, England) was a British nurse, statistician, founder of modern Western nursing and an influential reformer in the medical and health care sector in Great Britain and British India . The mathematically talented Nightingale is also considered a pioneer in the visual illustration of relationships in statistics.
