Edith Piaf
* December 19, 1915 in Paris, + October 10, 1963 in Plascassier
Édith Piaf (whose real name was Édith Giovanna Gassion) was a singing miracle.
Her height of only 1.47 earned her the nickname la môme piaf, "the little sparrow". But she didn't sing like a sparrow. The expression and volume of her voice made her one of the most famous chanson singers of all time. Songs like La vie en rose, Milord and Non, je ne regrette rien became unmistakable and unforgettable through the sound character of her voice.
Piafs singing was always an expression of her life's path, which was marked by many tragedies and obstacles. But even though she died at the age of 48, it seemed that her famous Song Non, je ne regrette rien (No, I regret nothing!)was her life motto.
2023 marks the sixtieth anniversary of the death of the queen of chanson. We take this as an opportunity to include you in our gallery of famous people.
There are numerous photos of Piaf, from her first years as a singer until shortly before her death. Most of the photos are professional shots, for which Piaf was specially dressed and made up. Only a few photos show her in everyday life. We decided to use one of the most iconic images of the singer as a model for our bust. The stage was her life and therefore it only made sense for us to present her the way she wanted to appear to the outside world. With our bust
we didn't want to separate the person Édith from the icon Piaf.
Both the strong make-up and her almost frizzy, curly hair were a big challenge when modeling. Depicting make-up in a colorless bust is only limited
possible. By slightly exaggerating the mouth and eyes we were able to get the impression of the make-up into the formal language of the bust.
For the hair, we decided to make the curls less frizzy. It is not possible to display every single hair when making a bust. Instead, you stylize the hair with fine and roughly modeled strands. We implemented this here, too.
We directed the view and head tilt away from the viewer and slightly upwards. This creates the impression of the aloof and distant spirit that appears in many photos of Piaf There are certainly many photos in which you can see Piaf laughing. But in that defiantly looking into the past, with his chin raised, we see Piaf's fighting spirit against the adversities of life. This is what we wanted to capture in our bust of Édith Piaf.
