Template for our bust were numerous photos of Thomas Mann. We had decided to model him with the brooding, questioning look, with which he was mostly photographed. In particular, the left raised eyebrow seems to have been a hallmark of Mann. Mann was one of the most important writers of the 20th century and, more than this, had highly regarded opinions on political, cultural and social subjects. After initial skepticism, he was a staunch defender of the Weimar Republic. It was our concern to capture both his seriousness in secular themes, but also his skeptical-ironic distance from his novel characters, in our bust. We see our bust as a portrait of that critical observer and questioner, as Thomas Mann probably saw himself at that time.

Thomas Mann
1875 - 1955
Thomas Mann was a German writer who emigrated under Nazi rule and became a US citizen in 1943. He is considered as one of the most important German writing narrators in the 20th century. For his first novel Buddenbrooks (1901) he received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929. His older brother Heinrich and three of his children (Erika, Klaus and Golo) were writers, too.
